Why Do Wipers Leave Streaks? Start With the Pattern
The shape of the streak tells you a lot about what is happening between the blade and the windshield. A thin line that follows the same path on every pass often points to a nick, hardened spot, or piece of debris on the rubber edge. Broad smearing across most of the glass is more likely caused by oil film, wax residue, road grime, or worn-out blades.
A wiper blade must maintain even contact with the windshield through its entire sweep. When the rubber edge is clean, flexible, and correctly loaded by the arm, it pushes water aside in one smooth motion. When any part of that contact is compromised, water and contaminants remain behind.
Pay attention to whether the streaking happens only in light mist, only at highway speed, or during every wipe cycle. Conditions matter. A blade that performs acceptably in steady rain may chatter or smear when the glass is only slightly wet because there is not enough lubrication between the rubber and windshield.
Common Causes of Windshield Wiper Streaks
Dirty or contaminated wiper blades
Rubber blades collect more than water. They pick up dust, tree sap, bug residue, road salt, tire dressing mist, and oily film from traffic. Even a relatively new blade can leave streaks if its wiping edge is dirty.
Lift each arm away from the glass and wipe the rubber edge with a clean microfiber towel dampened with windshield washer fluid or water and a small amount of mild soap. Incorrect blade fitment or poor blade design

Choose blades by year, make, model, and position. Driver and passenger sides are often different lengths, and rear wipers use their own fitment requirements. Weak, bent, or damaged wiper arms

Do not try to aggressively bend an arm by hand. It is easy to change the angle too far or damage the windshield. Washer fluid problems
